Delphinus beta by Stevolteon Delphinus beta by Stevolteon
Ugh, the light was nowhere near as good as I was hoping so it's a bit grim and grainy, but here it is! My improved Lego Delphinus.

What started out as a small tweak turned into a complete rebuild. The old version was close given the source material I was working from but open to vast improvement. The bow bulge was far too small before and though it's a nightmare of a shape to capture in Lego I think it turned out okay.

Because of the perspective of the main reference for my first version the prow was too long and wide and the superstructure (especially the bridge) was too small. All that has been fixed AND I managed to get the torpedo tubes in. I even have swap out parts for open tubes!

Despite being a fairly minor detail the anchors were one of the parts I agonised over the most, and the solution I have in place is a very basic representation at best. If inspiration strikes I'll update them. The flanks are also a bit gappy, but again it's a shape that just doesn't lend itself to Lego.

Anyway, over all I'm fairly happy with it. I'd have liked to get a picture of the old and new side by side but a large amount of its predecessor was repurposed for this build so alas it is no more!

Being a lover of both Legos and Skies of Arcadia, this makes me squee on the inside.

Hell yeah it was!

I still hope against hope for an HD re-release, or at least one that marries the increased content of the Gamecube version with the superior sound quality of the Dreamcast original.

Very nice, I particularly love how you formed the hull and the turrets.

Thanks, the turrets were actually one of the areas I spent the most time agonising over. They're a huge improvement on the previous version but in a literal sense not all that close to the in game model. I'm satisfied I couldn't have got them better with the parts currently available though!

Could you send me a schematic(if you have one) so i can build my own? I mean, I can't buy this model can I?

With regards the schematic, possibly!

The design was originally made in MLCAD and the construction is broken down into steps like the instructions on a real Lego model. If you have MLCAD (you might also be able to open the file in Lego Digital Designer, but I'm not sure on that) I will happily send you the original file.

If you don't have either program I think there's a way to get MLCAD to kick out the instructions as a PDF, but I haven't done it before so it may take me a little while to figure out.

Do be warned however, the model is nowhere near as stable as an official Lego model. Some of the sections are extremely tricky to put together and the finished piece is rather fragile. This is the downside to desigining things on computer where friction and gravity don't play a part!

Also, I don't have exact figures to hand, but if you're starting from scratch be prepared for the parts to set you back a couple of hundred. Much of my version was recycled from my previous model but to complete it I had to make several orders from BrickLink sellers and it wasn't cheap.
That said a number of parts were only just released at the time, making them hard to come by and therefore expensive. Now they've been in more sets the price should have dropped significantly.

Can I just use pieces from other Lego sets? Such as Star Wars, Star Trek, Ninjago, etc? Because I don't have any way of purchasing the original pieces of the Lego Delphinus online. Lack of a credit/debit account, if you will?
Is it possible to build the Delphinus from pieces out of any of the Lego sets I just mentioned?

Replied via e-mail, but in case anyone else is curious the only parts which you can't find in sets are the gun barrels. They are Lego "rigid hose", but had to be cut to length.

It does contain 758 parts though, and whether you can find them all in those themes I can't guarantee!

I too would love the schematics for this, if at all possible.  I am in love with this thing...

I'm having a little trouble making the PDF file, it keeps coming up as corrupted for some reason, but I'll see if I can figure something out.

The ship is from Skies of Arcadia, a JRPG originally on the Dreamcast re-released on the Gamecube. This is about the best in game picture I could find, and it shows the super weapon being fired which I didn't manage to fit in this model: [link]

The plan view I was working from which allowed me to make these improvements was this: [link]

Ah. Never played it. I was hoping it was the ship from an 70s space scifi anime I can't remember the name of.
